3 Ladies

Drag me—Drop me...

Ms. Thompson, Ms. Johnson, and Ms. Anderson, sit side by side
at a meeting of their neighborhood improvement group.
Ms. Thompson always tells the truth.
Ms. Johnson sometimes tells the truth.
Ms. Anderson never tells the truth.
The woman on the left says, "Ms. Thompson is in the middle."
The woman in the middle says "I'm Ms. Johnson."
The woman on the right says, "Ms. Anderson is in the middle."
What are the correct positions of the women?

To start thinking about this problem,
list all possible seating arrangements of the three women in a table.
Make a table in a comment below.
Watch the video showing how to make tables on the Make A Table page.

Argue for or against each arrangement.
You are going to arrange many things this semester.
Drag the ladies around with your mouse in the applet above.
How many positions did you count?

Reason

Start your table as above and add rows for each arrangement.

This problem is worth 7 points
if you make the table in a comment AND
you write one English sentence for each arrangement
stating why it is possible or impossible.

HOWEVER—
Before you receive your 7 points, you must answer the following question privately by email:
It is different!
Ms. Thompson always tells the truth.
Ms. Johnson sometimes tells the truth.
Ms. Anderson never tells the truth.
The woman on the left says, "Ms. Johnson is in the middle."
The woman in the middle says "I'm Ms. Anderson."
The woman on the right says, "Ms. Thompson is in the middle."
Now, what are the correct positions of the women?
You need not explain your reasons in the email.

T J A No-The woman on the left say that Ms. Thompson is in the middle, which would make Ms. Thompson a lier.
T A J No-The woman on the left say that Ms. Thompson is in the middle, which would make Ms. Thompson a lier.

 1 2 3Explanation
A J T The woman in the middle says,"I'm Ms. Johnson." Ms. Johnson sometimes tells the truth.
J T A The woman in the middle says that Ms. Johnson is on the left, she always tell the truth, therefore Ms. Thompson is the middle.
T A J The woman on the left, says that Ms. Anderson is in the middle.
A T JThe woman on the right says that Ms. Thompson is in the middle.
T J A The woman in the middle says that she is Ms. Johnson and that she is in the middle.
J A T The woman on the right says that Ms. Anderson is in the middle, Ms. Thompson never lies.

From GolfGirl - 9/20/06 6:31 PM

T J A The woman on the left says that Thompson is in the middle,so this order is impossible.
A J T Thompson never lies and the woman on the right says that Anderson is in the middle. Since Thompson is on the right it is not possible.
J A T Thompson never lies and she says that Anderson is in the middle, and she is on the right. So this order works.
T A J Thompson never lies. This order does not work because she is on the left. The woman on the left says that Thompson is in the middle.
A T J This is not possible because the woman on the left says that Thompson is in the middle, but Anderson always lies.
J T A This could be possible. The woman on the left says that Thompson is in the middle, and in this order Thompson is. The only problem is that Johnson sometimes tells the truth.

T J A Thompson wouldn't speak of herself in third person so this is incorrect
T Thompson wouldn't speak of herself in third person so this is incorrect
Thompson can not be on the left or the middle b/c she would be lying.  Which means she has to be the women on the right.  B/c she is on the right and she always tells the truth, that means that Anderson is in the middle.  And that would leave Johnson on the left.  This is correct
J Thompson can not be inb the middle b/c that would mean that she was lying by calling herself Johnson- Incorrect
A Thompson says that Anderson is in the middle and she doesn't lie-Incorrect
A T J Thompson can not be inb the middle b/c that would mean that she was lying by calling herself Johnson-Incorrect

The third arrangement works because the statement of the middle person - Ms. Anderson, who never tells the truth - is false. Also, the statement of the person on the right - Ms. Thompson, who always tells the truth - is true. The remaining position does not determine any additional information, as Ms. Johnson sometimes tells the truth and may or may not be in this case.

J A T Possible- The woman on the right says that "Ms. Anderson is in the middle". She is telling the truth because she (Mrs. Thompson) never lies. Ms. Thompson is the woman on the right. The woman in the middle says " I'm Ms. Johnson.", but Ms. Anderson (the one is the middle) never tells the truth. The woman on the left says " Ms. Thompson is in the middle.", however, Ms. Johnson sometimes lies. This is the best placement.

Reason
A
J
T
You can't trust Ms. Johnson because she sometimes lies. So, you know that Ms. Thompson had to have made the claim that Ms. Anderson is in the middle because she did not claim to be Ms. Johnson and she would not describe her position in the third person. Therefore, this can not be correct.
A
T
J
Again my the way the womens statements are made you can eliminate Ms. Thompson from being in the middle or the left, therefore her having to be on the right makes this combination incorrect.
J
A
T
This combination is correct since Ms. Thompson has to be the one on the right she always tells the truth and claims that Ms. Anderson is in the middle, only leaving Ms. Johnson to be the one on the right.
J
T
A
Ms. Thompson can't be in the middle because she doesn't lie, and the person in the middle said they were Ms. Johnson. So this is incorrect.
T
A
J
You know that the person on the left has to be someone who lies because of the claim the middle person makes to be Ms. Johnson which since Ms. Thimpson doesn't lie she can't be on the left.
T
J
A
You know the person on the left isn't Ms. Thompson because she wouldn't lie and say she was in the middle.

From JooJoo - 9/17/06 8:37 AM

 Left

Middle

Right Reasons
T J A This is impossible because if Ms. Thompson always tells the truth then she would be saying that Ms. Thompson was in the middle, and she is on the left. Ms. Johnson could be in the middle because she sometimes tells the truth, and Ms. Anderson could be on right because she always lies and she would be saying that Ms. Anderson is in the middle.
T This is also impossible. Ms. Thompson could not be on the right if Ms. Johnson was in the middle, Ms. Thompson could be on the right if Ms. Anderson was in the middle because that would mean that Ms. Thompson was saying that Ms. Anderson was in the middle. Ms. Johnson could be in the middle, and Ms. Anderson could be on the left because then she would be lieing about Ms. Thompson being in the middle.
JThis would have to be the correct sequence. Ms. Thompson could be on the right if Ms. Anderson is in the middle because then she would be telling the truth about Ms. Anderson being in the middle. Ms. Anderson could be in the middle because she would then be lieing about saying that she is Ms. Johnson. Ms. Johnson could be on the left because she sometimes tells the truth.
This sequence would be impossible. Ms. Thompson could not be on the left because she always tells the truth and then she would be saying that Ms. Thompson was in the middle. Ms. Anderson could be in the middle because she always lies and she would be lieing about saying that she was Ms. Johnson. Ms. Johnson could be on the right because she sometimes lies.
This is impossible. Ms. Thompson couldn't be in the middle because she never lies and then she would be saying that she was Ms. Johnson. Ms. Anderson could not be on the left because she always lies and she would be telling the truth in this situation about saying that Ms. Thompson was in the middle. Ms. Johnson could be on the right because she sometimes tells the truth.
TThis is impossible. Ms. Thompson could not be in the middle, because she always tells the truth and she would be lieing about saying that she was Ms. Johnson. Ms. Anderson could be on the right because she always lies and she would be lieing about ms. Johnson being in the middle, and Ms. Johnson could be on the left because she sometimes tells the truth.

J A T Correct:  This is the correct arrangement because Ms. Thompson always tells the truth which means she cannot be in the middle or on the left.  She is on the right and Ms. Anderson is in the middle which leaves Ms. Johnson on the left.

Correct. Since Mrs Thompson always tells the truth, she cannot be on the left or in the middle. Therefore, she is on the right and Mrs. Anderson is in the middle, like the truthful Mrs Thomspon said. That leaves only Mrs. Johnson who has to be on the left.

TRUE -  because: Ms. Johnson lies – “Ms. Thompson is in the middle”,  Ms. Anderson lies – “I’m Mrs. Johnson”, and Thompson tells the truth – “Mrs. Anderson is in the middle”.

Impossible because the woman on the right says "Ms. Anderson is in the middle" - Therefore it isn't Ms. Anderson on the right.

AndersonJohnsonThompson Impossible - Ms. Thompson never lies so she would not say Ms. Anderson was in the middle when she was not.

 1 2 3Reasons
T J A This cannot be correct because Ms. T is on the left and she does not lie, and the woman on the left claims that Ms. T is in the middle.
 T

Again, this seating arrangement cannot be true because it quesitons Ms. T's integrity and we know her to always tell the truth.
This arrangement is false as well because the woman in the middle claims to be Ms. J, in the arrangement the woman in the middle is Ms. T who (as stated before) cannot lie.
This arrangment is correct because it preserves the integrity of Ms.T because the woman on the right claims that Ms. A is in the middle which she is in this arrangment.  Also, the woman in the middle says that she is Ms. J while in reality she is Ms. A and we all know that Ms. A has a problem with lying. The woman on the left says that Ms. T is in the middle, however, we cannot hold her to her words for we know that she sometimes tends to lie which she may be doing in this situation.  I believe this situation is correct.
This arrangement cannot be true because the woman in the middle claims to be Ms. J which she is not, she is Ms T and she cannot lie.
This arrangement cannot be true because Ms T is on the right and the woman on the right claims that Ms. A is in the middle which she is not, thus the lady on the right is a lier which Ms T is not.

J
Again, Mrs. Thompson can not be in the middle because the woman in the middle is stating that she is Mrs. Johnson.
 AJ
T
This is the only position left for Mrs. Thompson so then we need to look at what she is saying. Since we know this is Mrs. Thompson & that she always tells the truth we know that Mrs. Anderson is in the middle, not on the left as shown.
 JA
T
Mrs. Anderson always lies to we can disregard that she is stating that she is Mrs. Johnson. Mrs. Johnson is on the left & is lying by telling us that Mrs. Thompson is in the middle. Therefore, we can conclude that this is the correct seating of each of the individual ladies. Johnson, Anderson, Thompson.

T J AThis cannot be if the women on the left says Thompson is in the middle cause she never lies.
T A J Thompson is not going to state that she is in the middle becuase she never lies. Anderson could be here because  she lies and would state that she is someone else
A J T This isn't possible because women on right states that Ms.Anderson is in the middle but Thompson doesnt lie.
A T J Johnson who sometimes lies states in this arrangement that Anderson is in the middle so this is not correct.
J A T Could possibly be the correct seating arrangement because the women on the left is Johnson who sometimes tell the truth say Thomson is in the middle. Anderson who always lies is in the middle because she states that she is Johnson. Thompson who always tells the truth states that Anderson is in the middle.
J T A This could hold correct because Johnson states that Thompson is in the middle. But Thompson tells the truth so this cannot be, she would have to lie.

TAJ – If Mrs. Thompson is on the left, and she says the lady in the middle is Mrs. Thompson then this configuration isn’t possible because Mrs. Thompson always tells the truth.

JAT – If Mrs. Johnson is on the left, she sometimes tells the truth – so if she says Mrs. Thompson is in the middle, then it’s possible.  If the woman on the right is Mrs. Thompson and she says that Mrs. Anderson is in the middle, she always tells the truth that leaves this as an open possibility

TJA – If Mrs. Thompson is on the left, and she says the Mrs. Thompson is in the middle, she always tells the truth – this is not possible.

AJT – If Mrs. Anderson is on the left, and she says that Mrs. Thompson is in the middle, she never tells the truth – this is not possible.

ATJ – If Mrs. Anderson is on the left, and she says that Mrs. Thompson is in the middle, she never tells the truth – this is not possible.

JTA – If mrs Johnson sometimes  tells the truth and she says that Mrs. Thompson is in the middle, then this is a possibility – so if the lady in the middle says I’m Mrs. Johnson and she is Mrs. Thompson who always tells the truth then that rules this combination out.

TJA- Ms. Thompson always tells the truth, so she cannot be he lady on the left, because the lady on the left says that Ms. Thompson is in the middle, and we know she is not.

JTA- Ms. Thompson can't be in the middle because she always tells the truth.  The lady on the left says Ms. Thompson is in the middle, but the lady in the middle says she is Ms. Johnson.

AJT- We have figured out now that Ms. Thompson is on the right, and she never lies.  The lady in the right says that Ms. Anderson is in the middle, not Johnson.

TAJ- This will not work just like arrangement TJA, cause Thompson cannot be in the left or middle.

ATJ- Ms. Thompson is not in the middle per reason JTA.

JAT- This is the right placement, Thompson tells the truth, and we have established that she is on the right, she says that Anderson is in the middle, so that leaves Johnson on the left.
