2. In the upper right on the PIX page, click Attachments under Page.
3. Click a Browse button next to a blank box.
4. Find where you saved your doodle on your PC, click on its filename, then click Open.
5. In the Description box to the right of the Browse button,
write a description of your doodle:
    Example: 6 points, 12 lines, 7 areas
6. Repeat steps 3, 4, 5 for your other doodle. Then click the Submit button.
7. At top of page, under Attachments for Pix, click View Page,
and then click Doodles on the menu to navigate to this page.

Add more rows as needed by clicking in bottom row of table.
Then click the Insert Row After button.
(Search for it on the tool bar: 5th gadget on lower tool bar.)

You receive no points for a disconnected doodle, or for 1-stroke non-returnable doodles.
Specify which is which in the table above.
If someone is wrong about their specification, let us know with a comment.
Some of the data are incorrect in the table.
Those doodles counted incorrectly are marked with a ?.
Recount them for points, and put a * next to your alias,
so I can give you a point;
or else you may mislead someone in assignment 2.
Help your neighbor correct it.
Also, disconnected doodles will not receive any points.

ASSIGNMENT

Doodles: Part 1

DOODLE ONE
Draw a doodle in the doodle box above so that...
a. your pencil never leaves the page,
b. you never retrace the same line, and
c. you arrive back at the same point where you started.
Call this type of doodle ONE-STROKE RETURNABLE.

DOODLE TWO
Now draw a doodle where you CANNOT return to your starting point
unless you retrace a line or take your pencil off the page.
Call this type of doodle MULTI-STROKE.
Multi-stroke doodles must also be connected, as are one-stroke-returnables.
The letters i and j are not connected doodles.

What is the difference between Doodle 1 and Doodle 2?
Doodle 1 can be drawn in one stroke.
Doodle 2 cannot be.
What other differences can you find between the two doodles?
Specifically, answer this question:
What is different about the way lines intersect in one stroke returnable doodles
and the way lines intersect in multistroke doodles?
Look at where the lines cross and make points.
What's different?
Fill in the blanks below, and explain your fill-in:
The intersections in a one-stroke returnable doodle are ______.
The intersections in a multi-stroke doodle are ______.

Careful! Some one-stroke doodles are not returnables.
In addition to the property that a one-stroke returnable doodle may be drawn
in one stroke without retracing any lines and return back to its starting point,
what other property(s) do ALL one-stroke returnable doodles possess?
Can you find those properties which will allow you to quickly determine
whether any given doodle is one-stroke returnable—without redrawing the doodle?
Write a rule in English that tells us what makes a doodle one-stroke returnable.
The definitions of one-stroke returnable doodles, and multi-stroke doodles,
will NOT earn you any points!

Look for another property that is obvious once you see it.

Continue drawing oodles of doodles until you discover the rule.
Writing the rule in English adds 5 points to your score
if you can also explain WHY your rule works.
Send me your rule and explantion privately!

Doodle in the doodle applet till you have a doodle you like.
You do not need to letter yours like I did mine.
Put your two doodles, one of each type, in a comment below.
Label your doodles One-Stroke Returnable or Multi-Stroke.
You receive 2 points, 1 point for each doodle, if correct.
That's 7 points total for Doodles: Part 1.

As you may imagine, such a rule would be highly practical
in telecommunications, networking, and transportation.
A pizza delivery man, for example, to save time and gas,
would like to deliver his pizzas without redriving any streets.
Can you think of other applications?

Doodles: Part 2

Count the points, lines, and areas in the two doodles you previously posted on the wiki.
Go to the wiki, fill in two rows in the table on the Doodle page.
Tell us your counts for each doodle, and which type of doodle it is.
Enter your alias in the last column.
These rows are worth 2 points if correct,
or if you correct it after someone has corrected you.
Likewise, if you find that someone has counted incorrectly,
inform them politely so they may receive their points.
Of course, you could both be wrong.

After this, put on your thinking cap, and find a formula
that relates the number of points, lines, and areas in each of your doodles.
Write your formula down.
Test it with everyone else's doodle examples.
Send me your formula privately.
Don't give away the answer.
Give others a chance too.
There will be a 5 point penalty if you tell;
and 2 points credit if you send the correct formula to me privately.
In addition, you can earn another 3 points when you explain,
in one paragraph, why your formula works for all doodles.
That's 7 points total for Doodles: Part 2.

Careful counting the lines in your doodles!
A line is by definition a connector between 2 points.
You may count L shapes as 2 lines with 3 points
or 1 line with 2 points.
But be consistent, or your count will be off in the table.

How did CatEyes get those lines so straight?

A one stroke returnable doodle opens up one area and is quite often bland in presentation.  A multistroke non returnable can be any shape, and can be characterized by its detail.

This is a single stroke doodle that returns to its starting point.

This is a multi-stroke doodle because you have to overlap lines in order to finish it.

The following doodles are new since my last comment.
Everyone read and look at these examples:

CatsEyes- looks like you chopped up a car.
You also left the doors and wheels disconnected.
Do not draw any disconnected doodles.
Redraw with connections, or the rules wont apply.

Nice scroll from Trixie.
Waiting for another one.
Dont put them on the home page.

Good Doodling from Aeneid and Zonino.

Harkar- T's and TiFF's good.

David- nice complex doodle. looks like a mars probe balloon.
hard to believe it is one stroke, but it's so.
when you discover the rule, you will quickly know why.

Shanja and Phoenix- read about URLs and attachments.
we cannot see your doodles. only you can see them.
you are URLing your home computer. No-no.

Kathi-
your fork and cup are both outlines and are 1 stroke.
But the eyes and mouth of your Honest Abe are disconnected from the other lines.
So dont count them unless you connect them somehow.

Reesie- this was your URL:
http://finite.editme.com/files/Pix/Reesie-Car.gif.gif
There is no need for the http://finite.editme.com/ part.
files/Pix/Reesie-Car.gif will do.
Also, dont put two extensions on your filename.
one gif will do it.

IF YOU NEED TO CORRECT YOUR WORK, MAKE A NEW COMMENT, AND URL YOUR PIX TO IT.
DO NOT EDIT YOUR OLD COMMENT.
OTHERWISE, I WILL NOT SEE ANY CHANGES ON MY DAILY SHEET.

Capricorn did some nice doodles, but they are too big in bytes and width.
Taurus - same for you.

Some of you, like Pringle and Cats Eyes, are copying previous doodles.
You receive no credit for copying previous doodles.

BassLady and Bob - the URL must be files/Pix/whateveryounamedyourpicture.gif
The URL cannot be your home computer!!!!!
That is why we have a Pix page.
Do not attach your doodles to the Doodle page.

cubebutterfly

Here is what Bob and BassLady should enter for an URL so all can see their Doodles:

files/Pix/Bob-Multistroke-Cube.gif

files/Pix/BassLady-multistroke-butterfly.gif

Otherwise, the URL points to a folder on their home computer !

ATTENTION!
Dragging and Dropping Does NOT Work!
Although you can drag and drop your doodle into a comment from your home folder,
no one else will see it.
See BassLady's example above. Notice that it is not there.
You must ATTACH your pictures to the Pix page before you can insert them in a comment.
Many of you attached your doodles to the doodle page, which is OK this time.
But in future assignments, you will not be able to do this.
Attach pix to the Pix page.
Read How to Use Hoversnap.

SuperDuke and All,

A point is any crossing of lines, or intersection of lines, or end of a line.
If you draw a circle or an outline, as in the flower above,
count where you begin and end as 1 point.

A line is any segment connecting two points.
A circle is a line even though you only count the start and end as 1 point.

Make sure all your lines are connected somehow to some other line.
If you draw an eye, connect it to another line somewhere.

From SuperDuke - 9/1/06 12:11 AM

 Aeneid,

Please check your eyeglass it is incorrect.

 Mr. Holt,

Would you please define what a point is? Is a point only where 2 lines intersect? Is a point also where a line starts or stops? What about when you change direction ( such as a 90 degree ) ?

what if lines intersect but do not cross another line?

Is a line one stroke? Or is a line each part between points?

I apologize for being confused. If it is not ok to ask these questions because they are related to rules I will not do this again.

From wHolt - 8/31/06 1:15 PM

Send me your rules and explanations privately!

Those who have already stated a rule
may leave theirs as is
because none of them are correct yet.
Although Superduke made a correct observation,
it is not sufficient to distinguish between all 1 strokes and multistrokes.

Do not reword the definition and expect points for a rule.
Look at where the lines cross and make points.

From SuperDuke - 8/31/06 8:01 AM

one stroke returnable

(Flower) Onestroke returnable, 1 line, 0 points, 4 areas

Rule: All one stroke returnables must possess at least one area.

Explanation: By returning to your starting point you have enclosed one side of your line regardless of shape, figure, or length.

      Multistroke

(House) Multistroke, 2 lines, 11 points, 3 areas

Rule: All Multistroke returnables must possess at least 2 areas

Explanation: By connecting an additional line to two points on a previous line you have divided the previous line into two or more areas, regardless of shape, figure, or length.

From wHolt - 8/30/06 11:40 PM

Good doodle start, Everyone...
Make sure to answer the questions for more points.
Do not draw any lines disconnected from others
as in Fro's eagle eye,
or the table will not reveal the pattern you are looking for.
Also do not copy my doodles, or anyone else's,
or you will not receive any points.
Someone copied my bowtie and xbox.
Do another.

1 stroke images are like a single thought...you have to finish where you started in order to end or close that thought.
Multiple stroke images are multiple thoughts combined to form 1 image with better detail.
Or at least that's how I see it.....

'tis a fairly simple matter to take a basic one-stroke, like a circle:

1 stroke returnable-starA one stroke doodle starts with one point and one line that may overlap as many times as you want it and still return to the starting point.

From Kathi - 8/30/06 5:33 PM

What makes a doodle one stroke returnable is when you are able to create the image without starting again & you are able to end the image in the place that you started it.Doodle1

A multi stroke doodle is when you are able to complete the item by taking the writing media from the page and beginning in a new spot. Doodle2
